An Old Oak Tree
This classic 1920s home in Providence has undergone two major landscape renovations over the past 14 years, thoughtfully blending timeless design with modern functionality. The backyard transformation centered on reclaiming the property’s majestic oak tree by removing outdated paving and creating an elegant outdoor living space inspired by the historic Dumbarton Oaks estate. Traditional clay brick patterns, a brick-edged bluestone patio, and natural bluestone pathways connect the patio, walkway, and swing area, while an arc of boulders creates an inviting informal sitting wall. A custom lattice-and-board fence provides privacy from neighboring properties and discreetly screens mechanical equipment.
Front yard improvements included reconstruction of the original entry portico steps and landing, installation of a brick-edged bluestone walkway, and replacement of the former concrete retaining wall with a natural stone wall and bluestone-capped columns marking the front walk entrance. An integrated irrigation system services both the landscape plantings and a pair of cast stone planters.
