About

Robert A. Matthews (“Bob”) grew up in rural eastern Connecticut, where the region’s rocky woodlands first inspired his appreciation for natural landscapes, horticulture, and gardens. His creative foundation was shaped through the Fine Arts program at Norwich Free Academy before relocating to Providence in 1984 to begin a career in the costume jewelry industry.

Beginning as an apprentice model maker, Bob advanced into sample making and design, working with celebrity designer brands for more than a decade. His creative path later expanded into floristry, where time with Howarth Florists deepened his understanding of floral design, composition, and retail presentation while he continued his jewelry work.

In 1995, Bob founded RAM Designs Unlimited, uniting his passions for jewelry, floristry, and design. At the same time, his lifelong interest in gardening and the natural landscape continued to evolve through work on his own property and projects for family and friends.

In 2005, Bob transitioned fully into landscape design while assisting landscape architect Ralph Hartman with site plans and client consultations. Influenced by Hartman’s horticultural expertise and Japanese design aesthetic, Bob established Robert Alan Matthews Garden Design, where he continues to create thoughtful, naturalistic landscapes rooted in artistry, structure, and a deep respect for place.
